Basic Betting Rules in the Game of Poker

There are many important things to learn if you want to learn to play poker well. Betting is one of the essentials of the game that is too often overlooked because its taken for granted. Of course, you have to bet in poker. If there were no money involved, well, it just wouldnt be poker any more. However, the bottom line is that there are smarter ways to bet than you might have already learned. If youre still betting based purely on instinct, take another look at your betting habits and try to work out ways to fine-tune your game.

The basic idea is that you can either just sneak by only meeting the other bets that the other players have made, or you can be the person at the table forcing everyone else to fold because you are raising the bets beyond what they think is good common sense for betting. Of course, some games dont allow uncapped bets, but if youre playing with friends who allow betting to go on and on, or if youre playing in a casino that doesnt cap the number of bets, you can win simply by being the smartest better. On the other hand, being the smartest better doesnt simply mean being the biggest better; the way to be the best better at the table is to know your odds and to know what kind of a game the other players at the table are likely to want to be playing. You have to be able to assess your own hand and figure out what the odds of that hand stacking up as the best hand at the end of the game. You also have to try to read your opponents so that you can figure out the relative strength of the hands that they hold. If they hold very strong hands, you can either be smart and fold, or you can be smart and simply beat them at betting.

If you want to ever win any games by betting, you have to be sly about it. You cannot always bluff people by raising the bets and forcing them to put money in or to fold. If this comes to be known as your thing then the other players will know this reputation and they will never believe that you have a good hand. The trick to getting betting to work for you is to fool your opponents. If you act like you have a good hand by repeatedly raising the bets, they will know that its statistically impossible for you to have a strong hand every time. Therefore, there are two times when you should get deep into the game without folding. The first instance is if you have a really strong hand. In this case, you should raise the bet many times, but in the safety of knowing that your hand is backing up your bets. On the other hand, if you have a so-so hand, you might decide to bluff your way through the round. If others call you on it, they might just think youre being overzealous about how good your hand really is.

If you choose your real losing hands as your bluffing rounds, and youre ever in a position to have to show your hand (which will happen sooner or later), your tablemates will see just how bad your hand was; this is when your reputation as the all-out bluffer will start to develop. Once you have this reputation, it can be very difficult to recover from it. Choose your strategy wisely and you cant lose.

Are You Interested In Playing Poker?

Maybe you recently caught a glimpse of the show Celebrity Poker and all it took was one episode and you found yourself hooked. Or maybe, all your friends have been raving about how addictive the game is and how much money theyve won. Now you know you’re getting a little bit interested, no matter even if you think taht curiosity has indeed started to kill the cat.

But dont worry, with poker, there shall be no senseless animal killing and anyone and anything can examine it to his hearts content. And so, if youre interested in playing poker, heres what you can expect.

Poker Is No Ordinary Game Most people think that poker is one of the easiest or maybe even the silliest card games because youre only holding two cards in your hand so how hard can it be? And it seems silly because with just two cards, people actually expect you to be able to deduce whether youve got a good poker hand or not and isnt that silly?

Were not all born with ESP here! But ladies and gentlemen, those are misassumptions although the general rules for poker are quite easy to understand, to be able to win not just once but consecutively, you need to have a variety of mental strategies to see you through. Michael Jordan said that basketball is more of a mental rather than a physical game, didnt he? Well, Im here to tell you that poker is more of a mental game, too rather than one that simply deals with random luck.

You Can Earn Money Playing Poker Another erroneous belief most people have is that since poker is above all, a card game. Since it’s mostly played in casinos, its very much a vice and can be the reason why your moneys flowing out like water. Well, thats where theyre wrong again! Its very easy to earn money playing poker.

All you need is to improve your playing style and money management. Yes, theres such a thing as money management in poker. Lastly, you need self-control. If you have that, then youll know when its time to stop playing poker and when its okay to press your luck some more.

Poker Is Fun If you think poker is a very serious game, youre partially right. But not all serious things are lacking in pleasure, you know. Take the game of chess, for example. It seems boring at first glance but when you learn how to play the game, it gets addictive. And thats how it is with poker as well.

An Early Guide To The 2006 World Series Of Poker

An Early Guide To The 2006 World Series Of Poker

Welcome to the poker betting column. Every week we will be analyzing recent player performances, the betting market and predicting future winners. Hopefully this column helps you make more informed bets, increases your edge and chances of poker betting success. It truly is a market where knowledge is money.

Today, an overview of the upcoming World Series of Poker and a few points to remember when making your picks.

The 2006 World Series of Poker is quickly approaching with an expected first-place prize of 10 million. Of course, that winner is going to have to battle through a grueling week of flush draws, open enders, 2 outers, cold decks and hot streaks. It will be a mental and physical roller coaster, testing a combination of skill, stamina, guts and luck.

Almost all sportsbooks will be offering lines on the winner market. Obviously this is the hardest pick to make, and therefore Id advise choosing a few long shots rather than any top-ranked player. There is clearly little value backing Phil Ivey at 125 1 or even Dave Colcough at 80-1!! Not only are these terrible prices to begin with, but also the players may not even be on form or running well in and around the tournament. Its always important to track each player’s recent performances when gauging their chances of success.

Poker players are a lot like horses in that recent form plays a huge part in how they perform. The best player in the world cannot beat cold decks or bad luck, and therefore running well is essential to having a real shot at winning. The five most important factors to consider when making your picks are: 1) Recent form running well vs. being cold decked. 2) Hunger to win any recent close wins fuel players’ desire to win the next event they enter. 3) Skillexperience level Players must be able to compete at the highest levels or at least have the guts to gamble. 4) Age As the main event is expected to take nine days to complete (though there are multiple Day 1s and 2s), players must be physically and mentally fit, able to stay sharp throughout. Fatigue causes mistakes, and mistakes cost you tournaments. 5) Style of play Weak tight vs. tightaggressive.

Here is a breakdown of those factors:

1. Recent Form: This is a key topic when analyzing the market and making your picks. Therefore, it is worth waiting until the last couple of days before the event to place your bets. We all know Ivey is widely regarded as the best player in the world, but even he will need to be focused and running well to win WSOP 2006. If he is too fatigued from the preliminary events and side action, then he will not be a serious contender.

2. Hunger to Win: Due to the volume of players entering the main event, competitiveness and hunger to win will play a vital role in players’ chances of success. For example, a player who simply wants to go deep and cash out is limiting his or her success level as opposed to the player who is playing to win. Even though the tournament cannot be won in a single day, players still need to be pushing every edge they can, staying sharp throughout, picking up every possible chip. With so many chips in play, chip accumulation is vital every day. Waiting for aces will not work. Remember, it is much easier to dominate the action at a table when you hold a large chip advantage, and if players can combine a large chip advantage with superior skill, there will be little that stands in the way of success, particularly if they are running well too!

3. Skill Experience: Due to the volume of entrants, and the grueling nine-day schedule, skill and experience will be vital to staying alive in the tournament. Even though Chris Moneymaker miraculously won in 2003 with little to no experience, it is worth remembering that the field was less than 1,000 players then, as opposed to 6,500-plus this year. Therefore, players lacking in skill and experience will need to get lucky many more times than Moneymaker did. There are simply too many skilled players and chips in play for an unskilled newbie to cruise to victory. However, with the increased popularity in online poker, many young players have the skill and experience to compete against the older brick and mortar veterans though any additional live experience Internet players have will be invaluable as many top online players fail to make the correct adjustments for live play. It’s a lot easier to pull off a stone-cold bluff online than it is face to face!

4. Age: Again because of the schedule and necessity for mental and physical fitness, many of the great, experienced veterans will find it difficult to stay in contention throughout the main event. At the same time, an overly aggressive youngster lacking in experience may blow up too early after having dominated the action early on. So both ends of the age spectrum can be advantageous and disadvantageous the key being to find the right balance and mental psyche in your player picks.

5. Style of play: Players will need to accumulate as many chips as possible at every opportunity while also avoiding the risk of elimination. Therefore a weaktight strategy will not be successful. Tight, aggressive play will win this tournament and crown the new champion. (Be careful not to confuse fearlessness with recklessness when analyzing players).

Good luck everybody, both playing and betting this week!

A Quick and Easy Texas Holdem Poker Lesson for Beginners

A Quick and Easy Texas Holdem Poker Lesson for Beginners

The great thing about Texas Holdem Poker is that it is easy to learn. Even a beginner can quickly develop into a winning player. By following a sound strategy and playing the best starting hands a Texas Holdem Poker newbie can dramatically shorten the learning curve. So what are the best hands that a beginner should play?

The best hands for a beginner to play are Ace-Ace, King-King, Queen-Queen, Jack-Jack, Ace-King suited (example Ace of clubs & King of clubs).

I strongly recommend that you only play these starting hands as a beginner. In other words, if you are dealt a hand other than one of the above then fold!

Folding is one of the most difficult decisions for a Texas Holdem Poker beginner to do. The mindset of most Texas Holdem Poker beginners is to hang around and see the flop in the hopes of hitting it just right and improving a hand.

While a beginner will hit the flop and improve their hand occasionally, more often than not they will miss it. The Texas Holdem Poker beginner player that plays poor starting hands will end up throwing more money away than they will win.

When you are dealt one of the best starting hands I recommend raising the pot which will serve two purposes. First, it will force players with weak hands to fold instead of allowing them to stay in the game and see the flop for free.

Secondly, by seeing who raises and calls you get to see who feels that they have a good hand and who may be trying to hang in for the flop.

When the flop is dealt you should look carefully to see if you have improved your hand. Even if you have not improved your hand, because you started out with one of the better hands you may still have the best hand. This is especially true if your starting hand was a pair of aces or kings.

If your opponents raise back this can be a strong signal that they may have a powerful hand. Ask yourself, What could my opponent have? Could they have improved their hand?

Ask yourself these questions after each round of cards are dealt and try to read your opponents hand.

If you have a high pair a raise after the flop can help you assess whether your opponents feel if they have a strong hand or not.

If you think you are beaten there is no shame in folding at this point.

When the turn card has been revealed, if you think that you may still have the best hand I would raise the pot so that I could obtain information about my opponents hands.

I would follow this same strategy on the river card.

To summarize this basic Texas Holdem Poker beginner strategy:
-stick to playing the best starting hands
-fold the bad hands
-use the power of the raise to knock out weak players and to assess the strength of your opponents hands

By following this Texas Holdem Poker beginner strategy you will start out winning more hands than you lose. You will start out winning more money than you will lose.
